The Nation-wide Opiate Epidemic and Litigation.   How big is it and how does it effect Wyoming?

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 - Noon - 1:00pm MT

Topic Summary:

On May 31, 2017, the Attorney General of Ohio filed a lawsuit against all five of the major opiate manufacturers alleging fraud, misrepresentation and nondisclosure seeking hundreds of millions of dollars to reimburse public funds that had been (and continue to be) exhausted due to the opiate crisis.  Since then counties and states across the country have followed with litigation; many having resolved for substantial sums.

On August 10, 2017 President Trump declared the opiate epidemic a "national emergency".  This presentation will detail the opiate background that initiated the litigation, the current litigation status across the country and the impact the opiate crisis is having in Wyoming.

About Your Speaker:

Jason Ochs began his legal career in 2002 with a national multi-district litigation law firm in Newport Beach, California. He litigated in the firm’s medical malpractice department trying a number of cases through trial and arbitration. Jason played a key role in more than a dozen complex medical cases resulting in seven-figure settlements and verdicts including birth-injury, delay in diagnosis of cancer, and emergency medicine.

In 2006, Jason joined the Orange County District Attorney’s Office as a Deputy District Attorney for a year of intense courtroom litigation. There he prosecuted hundreds of cases including vehicular manslaughters, domestic violence, aggravated assaults and money laundering. Jason sharpened his trial skills daily under the tutelage of former homicide prosecutors trying multiple cases to verdict.

Since leaving the District Attorney’s office, Jason’s practice has focused on complex litigation and trial work.

From 2009 through 2011, in the Advanced Medical Optics litigation involving hundreds of cases consolidated in Orange County, California against fortune 500 company Abott Laboratories, Jason spear-headed the plaintiffs’ electronic-discovery committee and was an active member of the deposition team.

Jason has been lead trial counsel in pharmaceutical, medical and constitutional cases, and is presently litigating several class-actions in various parts of the country.
